I
have stumbled across the joys of
participation in sporting events as
a lifestyle choice at the age of 24.
This started of as a 3km trot from
my campus residence at UJ to the
SABC and back. Although it was a
flat piece of road, it was hard. The
stitches I got during the trot and
the gasping for air afterwards even
worse. My effort evolved from there
over a period of twenty months into
an eight hour eight minute Comrades
Marathon in 1995.
From there on I ventured onto
Duathlon and then later Triathlon.
It just evolved that way in a very
natural way. So basically there is a
lot of sense to be made about Mr.
Darwin… though I am not quite a
dolphin in the water yet, I do know
that a wildebeest can be taught a
few new tricks.
What I love about triathlon is the
variety of training and the variety
of training venues. There is none of
the repetitiveness you have as a
pure cyclist, runner or swimmer, so
life remains more interesting. The
age group structure and the variety
of event distances offered makes
triathlon something any person can
fit into his or her schedule. I am
passionate about triathlon. It’s a
great lifestyle that you cannot grow
too old to live by.
