The race has a wet start and
starts in front of the VLC
clubhouse. The swim
direction around the buoys
is clock wise. (one lap is
750m) Athletes exit the
water onto the lawned
peninsula.
The mini is one 400m lap and
cuts the far end of the
triangle out.
A wetsuit ruling will be
announced on the day by the
Chief Race Referee (as per
the ITU competition rules –
see
rules
and regulations).
Please bring your own
brightly coloured swim cap,
as swims caps are not
supplied.
The transition area is split
into two rectangular camps;
one for the Standard
(closest to the club house)
and one for the other race
distances.
The swim in and run out are
on the same entrance/exit
spot and the cycle out and
cycle in is on the same
entrance/exit spot.
Please ensure that you
comply with the normal bike
check in protocol, which
includes a helmet and bike
safety check. See
rules
and regulations
Our cycle course is closed
to motorised traffic. We
have marshals and members of
the Ekurhuleni Metro on
duty. There are however
people that view driving
over curbs and through cones
and ignoring police
officials as normal
practice.
The cycle course is made up
of a 10km loop, mostly flat
with a couple of rolling
hills. The standard cycle
course consists of four
laps, the sprint: two and
the mini: one lap.
Athletes will push their
bikes out of north eastern
corner of the transition
area to the mount/dismount
line on the road side
outside the main entrance to
the VLC.
Always staying on the left
lane of the road, you will
proceed left onto Lake Road,
left onto Power, past the
golf course (THIS IS THE
MOST DANGEROUS PART OF THE
CYCLE COURSE, where golfers
with their caddies, golf
carts and short sightedness
and incomprehension of any
physics law on speed crosses
Power Road at two zebra
crossing points).
Once you have passed the
golf course you will turn
left into Rand Airport Road
(not using the slip road.
This is a 90 degree turn to
your left) From here you
will proceed to the circle
on Rand Airport Road where
you will make a U turn back
to the Power Road
intersection, taking the
slipway to your left.
Always staying on your left
of the road centre, you will
get to the Gosforth Park
intersection where the
route’s second U turn awaits
you. From here it is
straight back, past the golf
course to the VLC main
entrance where the third U
turn awaits you. Bear in
mind that this is also close
to the mount dismount line:
hence it is potentially a
dangerous spot. Please take
extra care of cyclists and
try and cycle in a
predictable way (and expect
some unexpected and
unconventional cycling
maneuvers from others).
From the dismount line push
your bike back into the
transition area, staying to
the left of the lane and
passing on the right.
The run out is on the same
spot as the swim in. The
actual start of the run
course is marked by the
water table. (ON YOUR LAST
LAP, you will still do the
dog leg rendezvous past the
water table.
The run course is a 2.5km
lap and you will either do 4
(standard distance), 2
(Sprint distance) or one lap
(for the mini).
The lap route goes out the
main entrance of VLC and
right onto Lake Road,
hugging the right hand side
of the road to the main
entrance of the Germiston
Lake Park (where the BSG
Energade Triathlon is held).
Here athletes will make a U
turn, backtracking back to
Lake Road where there is a
sharp right turn under the
Joubert Street Bridge. At
the turn around point, there
is the elastic collection
point. Each athlete must
collect an elastic on each
lap. That is your proof that
you have run 4, 2 or one
lap/s.
The last lap will take you
past the transition area and
the water table, over the
gravel, where you will make
a right (instead of a left
to do another lap) onto the
finish chute.
