FLYING THE FLAG IN WINTER

So not all of us can breath triathlon 24/7/365, and there are ways to stay active in winter that might keep you fit and sane at the same time.

It doesn't have to be quite as left field as Downhill or BMX racing, but if you ever wondered how some of us play off season, take a look at these (Troisport members have access to licenses for these through CSA. Click here for more info on club offerings)

Stoltz, Bucher win XTERRA East

Conrad Stoltz took his fourth straight win on the 2010 XTERRA America Tour and his fifth victory in six years at the XTERRA East Championship while Renata Bucher took her second XTERRA America Tour win of 2010 at Richmond Sunday.

Stoltz, a three-time XTERRA World Champion and two-time Olympic triathlete, took the lead on the bike and headed on his way to a 1:46:28 finish, 71 seconds ahead of fellow Stellenbosch, South Africa resident Dan Hugo.

"Since I finished high school in 1991 I've been racing professionally so I've had basically 18 summers back-to-back, so I'm familiar with the heat," said Stoltz. "I'm not great in the heat, though, so I have to prepare for it, which means pacing and never going too hard in the swim, bike or run. The whole race I had to pull back a little bit, pull back a little, and make sure I had some energy left for the run."

Swiss off road star Bucher won in 1:59:27, 68 seconds ahead of Shonny Vanlandingham of Durango, Colorado. Bucher passed Vanlandingham with four miles left on the bike and maintained her lead to the finish.

"I had a lot of emotion because it was such a tough week," said Bucher. "I had so much trouble with my toe, and I wasn't sure if I should go home, and I didn't do much physically at all. I didn't think I could win, but the doctor here helped me so much. I'm just very grateful for all the help and support I received."

Richmond was the fourth of six races in the XTERRA US Pro Series. Next up is the XTERRA Mountain Championship in Beaver Creek Colorado on July 17, and finishing with the XTERRA USA Championship at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden Utah September 25.

Ironman New Zealand Sells Out in 13 Days    Published Monday, May 17, 2010

Ironman's oldest qualifier sells out in record time

The Full House sign has gone up on next year's Ironman New Zealand only 13 days after entries were opened.

It is expected that a capacity 1500 participants will start in Taupo on March 5 next year which will be the first time in the event’s 27 year history that Ironman New Zealand has filled to capacity, let alone achieving this in only 13 days.

The unprecedented interest in the world’s original international Ironman race in New Zealand is in keeping with trends throughout the world which regularly sees Ironman events filled to capacity in North America, Europe and this year in Australia.

The initial upsurge of entries came from across the Tasman after the two Ironman races in their country filled to capacity two weeks ago, which promoted us to advise of the rush on entries.
